Hot and Bothered? Make Your Voice Heard Tonight!

Hi friends —

Hope the heat hasn’t got you beat!

Tonight, we have our first Culver City Council meeting in four weeks! We have a packed agenda full of major decisions including:

  • A-2: Whether to approve the use of Town Plaza for the New Zealand 2028 Olympic Committee for a cost of $700K+ to the city.

  • A-3: Whether to approve for single exit stairways in residential buildings that are up to six stories high

  • A-4: Whether to approve the terms of the $21 million loan related to the Jubilo Village Affordable Housing Project

  • A-5: Discussion of how to support community members who are directly affected by the ICE raids

As always, you can watch in person at Council Chambers (9770 Culver Blvd) or remotely on Zoom or Youtube.

You can sign up to speak at the button below or send in your comment by emailing city.council@culvercity.org.

This one outdated rule makes your rent more expensive …

Have you ever noticed how every apartment complex you see these days kinda looks like a hotel?? Each floor is designed as a “double loaded corridor” aka a hallway with rooms on either side.

And each apartment only faces the outside in just one direction.

So why do these massive hallways exist? In short… because of outdated fire safety standards.

Every single apartment complex is required to have access to two stair exits.

So whats wrong with that?

Well… all that extra space that isn’t housing?

It makes your home less sustainable, less ventilating, and most importantly… MORE EXPENSIVE TO RENT!

Requiring two stair exits lowers the amount of homes that can fit in the same building footprint, causing the rent to go up for everyone.

We have an opportunity to change that at tonight’s Culver City Council meeting where we will be deciding whether to legalize apartments up to 6 stories with just one stair exit.

Cities like Seattle, New York City, Austin, and Honolulu have already adopted new regulations for single exit stairway buildings .

And studies are showing… these homes are just as safe.

A Pew Research report states that “single stairway buildings are at least as safe as dual-staircase buildings when they are constructed with modern fire-safe materials and systems.”

So please, join us at 7PM TONIGHT at Culver City Hall or on Zoom and tell the City Council: it’s time to pass single stair reform!

Just register to speak for item A-3 with the button below.

Hope to hear from you tonight!

✅ Measure CL Passes!

Measure CL, which is estimated to bring in $5.6M annually to the city, has officially passed! ✅

This measure will not only help close our operating deficit first identified two years ago, it will ensure these vital dollars stay local to keep our growing city moving forward.

Thank you to the work of city staff, my colleagues on Council, advocacy groups, and of course Culver City voters for continuing to invest in our community’s future.

Around Town!

Culver CityBus Debuts Game Day Shuttle to SoFi Stadium!

with Mayor O’Brien and Chief Transportation Officer, Diana Chang

Football is back!

And to get to get to the Rams or Chargers️ games, you usually need to fork over $50-$100 for parking or an Uber…

But not anymore thanks to Culver CityBus 99 SoFi Express, which celebrated its grand opening today!

On regular season and weekend games, you can catch a shuttle from Westfield Culver City Mall (aka Fox Hills Mall) to SoFi Express every 20 minutes in the 3 hours before kickoff and return starting from the 3rd quarter until 90 mins post-game (or until all fans are onboard).

And it costs a whopping $2 for a round trip ride.

Congrats to Diana Chang and the Culver CityBus team for launching this incredible service.

This season, go Culver CityBus to SoFi!
