Culver City Celebrates Juneteenth!
Happy belated Juneteenth!
I got to attend the city’s celebration on Saturday alongside Vice Mayor Puza, Councilmember McMorrin, and School Board President Ezidore. Huge thanks to Edgar Varela and our special events team as well as the Juneteenth organizing committee for their work to make it such a joyous celebration of the end of chattel slavery in the U.S. and the continued struggle for freedom, equity, and justice for Black Americans that continues to this day.
Around Town
A ‘Better Overland’ is Coming!
I joined our fantastic public works staff on a walking tour of the Better Overland project, phase II! Which is a proposed protected bike lane on Overland from the Senior Center to Ballona Creek, part of a larger plan to eventually connect Fox Hills to the north end of the City with protected bike paths. I heard a lot of great feedback from the people who came and I’m just grateful that the project is moving forward again after years of delay.
You can join staff for the next walking tour on Tuesday, July 08, 2025 at 06:00 PM at Veteran’s Memorial Park!
44, the Obama Musical Takes it’s Final Bow at the Kirk Douglas
Congratulations to the Kirk Douglas Theater for finishing their longest-running and best-selling show ever, 44, The Obama Musical which I got to see with Aaron last week. The show is a blast, complete with catchy music and energetic dance numbers performed by a wildly talented cast— they had the whole crowd on their feet by the end.
Model ‘Citizens Assembly’ comes to Culver City
with city staff and community at the Citizens’ Assembly event.
Do you ever wish city government were more responsive to the needs of the community? Me too.
I was able to join a model Citizens Assembly at Vets Memorial put on by Public Democracy LA.
A citizens assembly is a group of randomly selected people, representative of a larger population, brought together to deliberate on an issue and make recommendations.
For this model exercise, we took on the problem of how to rebuild from the wildfires. We were educated by different stakeholder groups and then we worked collaboratively to come up with potential solutions.
It was an eye-opening experience and I’m grateful to the organizers for inviting our Council and staff and to CFO Soghor, Assistant CFO Elizabeth Shavelson, and Asst City Manager Jesse Mays, and Asst. City Attorney Christina Burrows and many members of the community attended.
These assemblies are used in cities around the world to help cut through the noise on spicy topics and create more educated and responsive decision-making by us, your elected leaders.
We will be receiving a presentation from Public Democracy Los Angeles at the Governance Committee 7/8 at 3PM, so please join us at City Hall or on Zoom if you’re interested and share your thoughts!
