Sales Tax + Gun store + legal counsel for tenants
Friends and neighbors,
After a month off, we’re back!
I wanted to make sure you knew that there’s an important Culver City Council meeting tonight discussing some very important issues.
Here’s a 30 second video, or just keep scrolling to read it!
Among them:
Whether to hold a special election in August asking voters to raise the sales tax by a quarter cent to address our structural deficit
What to do with the gun store the city purchased in 2023 (housing, community center, both??)
Whether to officially adopt the Right to Legal Counsel pilot program for low income tenants facing evictions and whether to direct staff to include money for it in next year’s budget.
As always, you can watch in person at Council Chambers (9770 Culver Blvd.) or remotely via Zoom.
You can request to speak here or send in your comment by emailing city.council@culvercity.org.
Hope to see (or hear) you there!
Around Town
Chag Pesach Sameach, Culver City! Aaron and I had a great time at Temple Akiba’s beautiful seder last night. I hope you also get to enjoy the week with family and friends and find time to ‘welcome the stranger’ in your own way.
My table started off as strangers and after sharing a delicious meal together, walked away as new friends. We left feeling grateful and full in every sense of the word! 🍷 🥘
I was able to attend a screening of the powerful, Academy Award-winning documentary No Other Land, created by a Palestinian-Israeli collective. It follows Palestinian families in the occupied West Bank as they fight to protect their homes and communities from state-sanctioned violence.
As the world looks away, their resistance is captured in raw, unflinching footage. The film is both a heartbreaking reminder of the horrors of forced displacement and a testament to the resilience of those who have no choice but to fight for their survival.
Saturday marked the start of Passover, a holiday that tells the story of the Jewish people fleeing oppression in search of freedom. As we reflect on that journey, we’re also called to remember that the struggle for safety, dignity, and a place to call home is ongoing—and shared.
This film drove home that our struggles are intertwined, and so is our liberation. May we find the courage to stand in solidarity with one another, even when it feels most daunting.
While it hasn’t yet secured a distribution deal, grassroots organizations across the country are hosting screenings—and I highly recommend finding one near you.
Hundreds of people in Culver City hit streets on Saturday April 5th to stand together against tyranny and oligarchy. The size of the protest made it abundantly clear, if there was any doubt, that Culver City remains full of folks committed to inclusivity and progress.
