Two Culver City groups inspiring me right now

Hi friends,

I hope you had a fantastic Super Bowl / Taylor Swift / Usher Sunday for all those who celebrate!

I wanted to tell you about two groups of Culver City organizers who have already inspired me as we begin this campaign.

YES on Measure E for safer, better Culver City schools

A group of parents (and me) in Blanco Park get the word out to vote YES on Measure E.

Parents across the city are organizing right now for Measure E: a bond on your ballot (due March 5) that would raise $358 million to fix deteriorating facilities, update aging technologies, and improve the safety and quality of Culver City schools.

By law, all funds must be spent supporting CCUSD schools, and the measure includes an independent citizen oversight committee and public reports of all spending.

I believe Measure E is urgently needed to keep Culver City students on the path to success in higher education and beyond, and I urge you to vote YES.

I am inspired by the group of parent advocates that have organized together to get this passed, and if you want to help them too, you can donate, endorse, volunteer, and put up a lawn/window sign. Click below!

Vote16CC - Expanding the voting age in city elections

Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin with Vote16 organizers (left to right) Jamiee Bowman, Audrey Rothenberg, Julia Rottenberg, Mimi Mirvish, and Nava Waisman.

Just as inspiring, a group of students from Culver City High School are organizing to put Vote16 back on Culver City’s ballot this year. Vote16 is a national initiative to expand the voting age to 16 for city elections, and it lost in Culver City’s last election by a razor-thin 16 vote margin (the cruel irony)!

Now an impressive new group of student advocates have stepped up to get this important measure over the finish line in 2024.

I am proud to support Vote16CC, because when it comes to local elections, the stakes could not be higher for young people. Many of our high schoolers have jobs and pay taxes, and our young people will be the most impacted by many our city’s biggest challenges, like climate change and the rising cost of housing.

I believe our high school juniors and seniors are independent thinkers highly capable of reasoned decision-making, and recent studies affirm that too. We should encourage young people to engage in local issues and act civically by giving them a voice in the elections already impacting them.

I encourage my Culver City and LA-area neighbors to join me in canvassing with Vote16CC. They need 4,200 signatures by July to get back on the ballot, and they need your help to get them!

I am inspired by these advocates just as I am inspired by you for joining this campaign for a sustainable, inclusive Culver City.

We are in this fight together, and I know we are going to make lasting, impactful change as a city in 2024 and beyond.

Let’s do this!
