Packed agenda for the last big meeting of the year
Hi friends,
Our last big Council meeting of the year is tonight! There will be one in December, but it’s typically very light since the Mayor / Vice Mayor rotation happens then.
Some important items on the agenda this week include:
A-1: Whether to create temporary subsidies to incentivize film production
A-2: Whether to approve changes to the rent control/stabilization ordinance
A-3: How to govern the use of military equipment by CCPD
A-4: Selecting a vendor to conduct a civic assembly to improve the budget process
A-6: Creating a ‘new business’ section of the Council agenda
A-7: Creating a pilot program for robot food delivery devices
As always, you can watch in person at Council Chambers (9770 Culver Blvd) or remotely on Zoom or Youtube.
You can sign up to speak at the button below and send in your comment by emailing city.council@culvercity.org or sending an e-comment.
A big week for Dems (and Culver City)
I do have some news from the last Council meeting, but first, we need to talk about last week’s election.
This wasn’t just a win for Democrats — it was a wake-up call to the billionaires and MAGA extremists that their days of unchecked power are numbered.
Democrats swept, including Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani who will soon become mayor of the largest city in America.
And here in California, Prop 50 soared to victory — neutralizing Texas anti-democratic gerrymandering scheme.
A few days before Democrats racked up wins across the country, your local Culver City Council was also making big moves — at a meeting that went until 12:28 in the morning.
🏛️ Civic Assembly to improve budget process approved!
Culver City voted 3 to 2 to explore launching a Civic Assembly — a group of randomly selected residents, paid to learn, deliberate, and recommend how to make the city budget process more transparent and accessible.
💼 Small business support programs started!
Council also went unanimous on supporting small businesses, appoving:
- A new small business development program
- A waiver of city permit fees up to $5,000 for
- A new $1,000 grant program
That’s the biggest news from the last Council meeting.
Election night was a much needed dose of hope — and I hope you’re feeling some of that here at home too.
Remembering Conor Proffitt
Earlier this week, I attended a memorial for Culver City resident, advocate, musician, and friend, Conor Proffitt.
Conor was a natural organizer with a fierce sense of justice and a gentle heart. He showed up—for his neighbors, for his community, and for people he’d never meet.
Here in Culver City, he volunteered on local campaigns and spoke at City Council meetings for safer streets, affordable housing, and a more sustainable and inclusive future for all of us.
He also raised his voice for peace beyond our borders. Conor stood with Culver City Residents for Peace to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and fight for the dignity and safety of others around the world.
Conor died by suicide at 37. His passing is a reminder of how important it is to care for one another, to check in, and to reach out—even when it’s hard.
If you are struggling with depression or thoughts of suicide, please know you are not alone. You can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You can also reach the CalHOPE Warm Line at 833-317-4673 or Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services at 424-362-2900.
Conor’s absence is felt deeply. We will remember him for his kindness, his courage, and his relentless belief in a better world.
