Happy Pride Month!

Happy Pride Month, friends!

Councilmember Freddy Puza is throwing us an LGBTQ & Allies house party this Saturday, June 8 from 4-6 PM in Culver City! We would love to see you all there. Click the link below to RSVP and receive the address!

I am honored to have the support of my mentor and friend, Councilmember Puza, the first openly LGBTQ Councilmember in Culver City’s 107-year history. Freddy leads with empathy and a passion for diving into the details to find solutions. I continue to learn from him every day.

This is a special time of year for so many of us. I often reflect on how much progress we have made on LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance over the course of my lifetime.

I feel beyond fortunate to have benefited from the advocacy of so many queer leaders and advocates before me, and to have the love and support of my husband, family, and friends including you.

Growing up in a small suburb outside Houston, Texas without any openly LGBTQ folks in my everyday life, I remember feeling scared to embrace my true self, because I was worried about all the people I would disappoint. I wondered if I would ever have a “normal” life.

That’s why I co-created the city’s first and only official Pride celebration with Councilmember Puza and now-Mayor McMorrin, now in its fourth year.

Culver City Pride Ride & Rally brings the joy of Pride to the doorstep of thousands of Culver City families, including many young people who may not feel ready to attend a Pride parade, but might feel encouraged and supported seeing one pass by their door.

It’s worth celebrating that many kids growing up today no longer have to worry about whether they will be able to marry the person they love or start a family.

But our inclusive community here in Culver City is not a given–it takes work to make it a place where everyone feels welcome.

The policy choices we make from housing to mobility to public safety, all impact whether Culver City is truly accepting of everyone.

Do we have housing for families of all incomes? Do we have safe ways to get around, even for those who don’t drive? Are we caring for people in crisis or putting them further in harm's way?

The answers to each of those questions shows us how inclusive we truly are.

I hope you have a Pride Month full of love for one another and for yourself. No matter who you are or who you love, you deserve to be celebrated and cared for by your community!

Hope to see you at Freddy Puza’s LGBTQ & Allies fundraiser this Saturday and at Culver City Pride Ride & Rally on June 29th!

Happy Pride!
