Making (heat) waves…

cyclists using Move Culver City's bike lanes

Friends—

I’m so excited to share that California Assemblymember (and soon-to-be Congresswoman) Laura Friedman has endorsed our campaign!

During my time as a state policy director for Streets for All, I had the opportunity to work with Assemblymember Friedman on several state bills that are now law and already making our streets safe and our communities more climate-resilient. And I’ve always been inspired by her vision for a California that invests in active transportation.

Climate change is here, and we will certainly feel it when we step outside this weekend.

We’re at the start of a historic heat wave right now that threatens the most vulnerable people in our communities, the type of weather event that is the direct result of our failure to invest in green infrastructure and curb our emissions.

From day one, fighting climate change has been a central pillar of this campaign, and it will always be my priority.

At the same time that a massive heat wave hits our region, construction work will begin to remove one of only two protected bike lanes in our entire city. Families have grown to depend on this bike lane for nearly three years to safely get to school, work, the senior center, the grocery store, you name it.

And yet our conservative City Council majority voted to remove it in order to bring back a lane for cars… the same cars that constitute the majority (56%) of emissions in Culver City.

As the only candidate that lives directly on this project and therefore uses it every single time I leave my home, I know that there are real issues with this project. I have sat in stop-dead traffic after a long day wondering when I would be able to get home. Getting to or through downtown in a car can be grueling.

But as the only transportation professional in this race, I also know that ripping out the beginning of a protected bike lane network is not the answer to our traffic woes.

It’s important to remember that around the same time this project opened, on this same cooridor, three of the world’s largest companies opened their brand new offices with parking for thousands of workers commuting from across the county. And that the project met its set goals— the bike lane now being removed caused a 68% increase in micromobility trips and a 57% increase in cycling according to the city’s post pilot report.

As your Councilmember, I promise to make data-driven decisions that focus on our future and prioritize the safety of everyone, whether you are driving a car, riding a bike, taking the bus, or pushing a wheelchair.

I’ve spoken to thousands of young people at the doors who have cited climate change, and the lack of action to fight it, as their greatest anxiety about the future. As the youngest person in this race, I relate deeply to those fears.

If you are fed up with our lack of action on climate change, sign up to knock doors with us this month and connect with neighbors. Door by door, we’re talking to every voter in Culver City -- that’s how we’re going to win.

We also have a meet and greet coming up if you ever want to come chat in person. There’s nothing I love more than talking to Culver City residents and workers about the issues that matter most to them.

To RSVP, please email meetbubbafish@gmail.com with the name of your attendees

There are officially 60 days until Election Day. Vote by mail ballots will start hitting Culver City mailboxes in just one month

That means now is the most crucial time to:

AND don’t forget of course…

I’m feeling proud of the work we’ve accomplished over these last few months, and our momentum heading into November. As of the last filing, we’ve raised the most money from the most individual donors (average donation $100!!) and received the most organizational endorsements of anyone in the race.

We entered this race as an underdog; we promised from day one that unlike our conservative opponents, we wouldn’t accept money from big property management and development companies. It’s because of your grassroots support that we’ve made it this far.

Thank you for embarking on this journey with us. We are honored to stand with you for a brighter future!

With gratitude,

Bubba
