Homelessness is Down in Culver City for 5th Straight Year

Did you see the good news?
Homelessness in Culver City is DOWN for the 5th year in a row — a 69% drop since 2021. 📉
This year alone, we’re down 30%, while LA County and the City of LA both saw increases.
That’s not luck… it’s what happens when a city puts its own dollars to work instead of waiting for someone else to solve the crisis.
Shout out to our incredible city staff, state and federal leaders, and partner organizations who make this progress possible.
74 unhoused neighbors is still 74 too many… and we won’t stop until nobody is living on Culver City streets.
New video: poll shows 14% jump in Culver City voters who say city is “on the right track”
In more good news, a new scientific poll is out showing the number of Culver City voters who say the city is ‘on the right track’ has increased by 14% ⬆️ since March of 2025 (close to the start of my term). Here are the results:
From affordable housing to rental assistance programs to repairing parks and sidewalks and making our streets safer… it’s great to see the work we’re doing positively impacting how residents feel about their city.
And we’re still just getting started.
Tonight! Results of the Civic assembly, subsidies for after-school care, a moratorium on Waymo facilities, and minimum wage for housing projects
There are quite a few important items on tonight’s agenda! Here are the big ones:
A-1: Presentation on results of the civic assembly on increasing public participation in the budget process.
A-3: Approval of subsidy program for culver city afterschool recreation program (CCARP)
A-5: Interim urgency ordinance establishing a 45-day moratorium on AV vehicle (Waymo) fleet services while an ordinance is drafted establishing standards and approval procedures including locations, siting, staging, dispatch, performance standards, etc.
A-7: Discussion of potential residential construction minimum wage (for small housing projects)

Food Trucks in the Parks
We advanced a pilot to bring food truck vendors into City parks from January through June. The concept: two parks per week, capped at eight vending days per month, 3–7 PM on weekdays and 11 AM–7 PM on weekends. No final action yet — staff is taking the feedback back.
Hotel Tax Heading to the November Ballot
Council voted to put a Transient Occupancy Tax (tax on visitors, not residents) increase before voters this November, which would move the rate from 14% to 16%. After meeting with hotel owners, we structured the increase to phase in gradually — 15% in March 2027, 16% in March 2028. When it passes, the measure will bring in ~$2 million/year to fund everything we do in Culver City. Passed 3–1 (CM Vera opposed, CM O'Brien recused).
Parking Fines Updated for the First Time Since 2008
Unanimous vote to adopt a new civil penalty schedule for parking violations. Our fines have sat untouched for 18 years and are well below surrounding cities. Implementation is held to January 1, 2027 to allow for a real public outreach campaign first.
A New Standing Affordability Subcommittee
Council unanimously created a standing subcommittee focused on the cost of living here — rent, childcare, transportation, utilities, food access, and workforce development.
