Monday’s tragedy

Hey friends,

I am devastated to learn that a pedestrian was killed yesterday afternoon at Wesley & National, just 100 feet from my home and near an elementary school where families cross the street daily. My heart hurts for the family of the man who was killed.

National Blvd has some of the narrowest, most inaccessible sidewalks of anywhere in the city, and the adjacent 5-lane road is designed for speed with no traffic calming infrastructure to speak of.

The intersection is also just a block from where the city has taken the unprecedented step of removing safe streets infrastructure that has been in place for nearly three years, allowing cars to drive more recklessly.

Traffic deaths are preventable. Each life lost on our roads is not just a tragedy-- it is also a policy choice. These deaths are not normal, and there are proven methods of keeping people safe that other cities are hard at work implementing right now. Except Culver City.

Since the conservative Council majority was seated in 2022, they have voted to remove multiple safe streets projects and delayed several in the queue that could prevent future tragedies like the one we saw yesterday.

Every day that we delay implementing proven safety infrastructure, we put lives at risk. According to the Los Angeles County coroner, car crashes are the number one killer of children in the County. It’s not radical to believe that children should be able to safely walk to school or that our neighbors shouldn’t have to put their lives at risk just to take their dog on a walk.

If you are ready to join our movement for a new way forward, now is the time to support.

The most impactful way to help at this stage is to come knock doors with us this weekend. No experience necessary. We’ll show you the ropes, and you’ll be a pro in no time.

Switching gears, we are ringing in a new year of possibilities this evening at our casual Rosh Hashanah celebration. Come through with family and friends for apples, honey, music, and meaningful conversation about the future of our city. We would love to see you there. All faiths and backgrounds welcome.

Thank you for standing with us for a brighter future for all of us. And thank you for all the good energy you have given our campaign so far, I could not be more grateful.

With hope,

Bubba
