Tonight! Lowering the voting age for local elections

canvassing with Vote16 organizers in 2024

Hi friends,

I’ll cut right to the chase— there’s a big meeting tonight. We’ll be deciding a number of important items, among them:

🗳️✨ Lowering the voting age (A-1)
We’ll decide whether to put Vote 16 on the 2026 ballot — allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in local elections. (It failed in 2022 by just 16 votes 👀).

Studies show that 16 and 17 year olds are fully capable of making civic decisions and that reducing the voting age creates more consistent voters.

If the Council agrees to place the measure on the ballot tonight and it passes, Culver City would join 12 other cities across the country that allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote in local elections.

🏡🔑 More homeownership opportunity (PH-2)
We’re also considering allowing ADUs to be bought and sold separately, creating new paths to homeownership.

🏗️ More homes a-comin’ (PH-4)
Council will consider what would be the largest housing project in city history: 1,077 new homes in Fox Hills, including 78 for low-income tenants.

All of that and more — tonight at 7 PM!

Here’s how you can plug in tonight:

  • Attend in person at Culver City Hall or join on zoom.

  • Watch online via the city’s YouTube channel.

  • Sign up to speak using the button below.

See you tonight at the meeting!

Gun store to become 67 affordable homes + protected bike lanes on Overland passes!

[1/26 Council recap]

Last week’s Culver City Council meeting went until 1:26 AM😵‍💫 (if you can believe)

The highlights ⬇️

🔫 ➡️ 🏠 From gun store to 67 homes
We bought a gun store just 878 feet from an elementary school and unanimously approved turning it into 67 affordable, car-free homes for low-income families — with priority for teachers, plus a community art space.

🚲💚 Safer streets
The Council unanimously approved 1.5 miles of protected bike lanes on Overland Blvd, connecting Venice Blvd to Ballona Creek and eventually Fox Hills — the first continuous protected bike route linking north + south Culver City.

🛑🧊 Protecting immigrant families
We directed staff to strengthen Culver City’s Sanctuary City protections by restricting ICE from using city-owned land and facilities.

Sunday: Join me in support of Faizah for Los Angeles City Council!

This Sunday, I’m excited to be co-hosting a neighborhood fundraiser for Faizah Malik, who is running for Los Angeles City Council District 11 — the district that borders Culver City and shares so many of our values and challenges.

Join us Sunday Feb. 15 from 3–5 PM for good food, great company, and a chance to support a bold, values-driven candidate who is organizing for more affordable housing, safer streets, and a more just Los Angeles.

I’d love to see you there and introduce you to Faizah. Come by, say hi, and help us build momentum for this important race.

Around Town!

Standing with California nurses

I was proud to join the picket line at Kaiser West LA in solidarity with thousands of nurses, nurse practitioners, and occupational therapists across California ✊🩺

Healthcare workers are demanding safe staffing levels, fair wages, and real protections against burnout. Because quality patient care depends on workers being supported, respected, and able to do their jobs safely.

I’m showing up for the workers at my own hospital, who take incredible care of me and thousands of Culver City residents, students, and workers with professionalism and compassion. Standing with them is the least we can do.

When healthcare workers win, patients win. Solidarity always. 💙

Happy Hour with Trojans for Housing

I spent a recent the evening with brilliant student organizers from Trojans For More Housing listening to them share how the housing crisis is hitting young folks the hardest.

We talked about how Culver City is too expensive for so many… and what we’re doing about it, like:

  • building record number of Affordable homes

  • single stair reform

  • supporting SB-79

  • expediting housing production

  • expanding tenant protections

i enjoyed showing them around Downtown Culver City (and Walter was proud to tag along 🐾)

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with me.

In service,

Bubba
