TONIGHT: ICE-Free Zones and Bike Lanes

Hi friends,

The new year is already testing us with the murder of Alex Pretti, the 8th person ICE has killed since Trump took office, not counting the six Americans who have died in ICE detention centers in 2026 alone.

There is nothing any of us say to make this moment go away. We have to plug into our communities and take action.

Shout out to the one hundred protestors who shut down a Home Depot in Ladera Heights over their complicity with ICE and the hundreds of community members who have shown up week after week to protest the absuses of the federal government.

You’ve heard many folks say when they go low, we go local.

Well, here are some other ways you can do just that. Shout out to my colleague Councilmember McMorrin for sharing this.

Big Meeting Tonight! ICE-Free Zones and Protected Bike Lanes on Overland

Tonight, we’ve got a packed agenda.

🚫🧊We’ll be discussing a proposal to prohibit the use of City property for immigration enforcement. Culver City has been a sanctuary city since 2017 — and in this moment, we need to use every tool we have to stand up to a violent federal administration.

🚴‍♂️ We’ll also vote on protected bike lanes on Overland Boulevard, from Venice to Ballona Creek.

🔫➡️🏡 From guns to homes! — we’ll consider turning a former gun store into 67 homes for low-income workers, with a preference for teachers.

👷‍♀️We’ll give direction on creating a project labor agreement to support good union jobs.

🌝🇨🇳And we’ll discuss launching a Lunar New Year celebration on February 22, 2026.

All of that — tonight at 7 PM! You can join us on Zoom or in person at Council Chambers.

Here’s how you can plug in tonight:

  • Attend in person at Culver City Hall if you’re able.

  • Watch online via the city’s YouTube channel if you prefer to join from home.

  • Sign up to speak using the button below.

Hope to hear from you tonight!

Culver City begins civic lottery process: will you be chosen?[Recap of 1/12 Meeting]

model civic assembly in Culver City put on by Public Democracy Los Angeles

What if you could have a seat at the table for some of the biggest decisions shaping your city?

Well, at our last Culver City Council meeting, we approved our first-ever civic assembly: a group of randomly selected residents who will be paid to give their input — starting with our city budget.

Soon, the City will invite 30 residents, selected at random (but still reflecting Culver City’s demographics), to weigh in on how our budget process works and how they want to be involved.

Their recommendations will go straight to the City Council, helping ensure our budget reflects the values of the communities it’s supposed to serve.

Civic assemblies have been used around the world for decades, and they’re just starting to take hold here in the U.S.

This is a real opportunity to help shape the future of our city. So if you’re invited to enter the lottery in the coming months — I hope you do!

We also approved the creation of a Commission in Support of Women & Girls, brought forward by Councilmember McMorrin.

This new body will examine how Culver City can better support women and girls, including pathways to leadership.

Thanks for catching up with me.

Despite the chaos all around us, we are still capable of so much good here in Culver City. Thank you for staying plugged in!

In service,

Bubba
