More homes near transit coming soon!

Hey friends,

Your City Council has been busy! Our last meeting ran until 11:26 PM. Here’s what we got done. 🏙️

More homes near transit, stronger renter’s protections, and a civic assembly!

[3.16 Council Recap]

🏡🚊 More homes near transit coming soon

We approved the start of an alternative plan for SB-79, which will allow us to build even more homes near transit, where we need them most.

The plan will create significantly more homes than the default plan and will push the density close to transit based on how people actually travel to the stations. Staff will begin work on the plan shortly, and we should be getting periodic updates soon.

🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Civic Assembly launched

We launched our first civic assembly, approving the question “how might Culver City increase participation in the budget process?” Invites are out now. More info on that below!

👩‍💼👨‍💼 Right to legal counsel application submitted

By a 3-2 vote, we agreed to apply for $750,000 in state funds to create a “right to legal counsel” pilot program to help keep low-income renters in their homes.

This was a promise of my campaign, and if we win these funds, we will be well on our way to finally establishing this vital program to keep people in their homes and off the streets.

Tonight at 7PM!

🍻 legalizing “entertainment zones” (outdoor drinking at special events)

🏗️ creating a joint powers authority to finance big capital projects like affordable housing, Bill Botts Field repairs, etc.

👮 reviewing security services at City Council meetings and deciding whether to scale down and use money elsewhere.

Come be part of it! Join us tonight at City Hall, Zoom, or on the city’s YouTube channel.

Civic Assembly invitations are out!

Check your mailbox because invitations to be a part of Culver City’s very first civic assembly are officially OUT!

A civic assembly is a randomly selected group of residents who are educated on a topic and then asked to deliberate together to come up with recommendations for us, the city council.

For our first civic assembly, we will be asking 30 participants how Culver City might increase participation in the budget process.

Civic assemblies have been used around the world for decades to help local government solve some of its trickiest problems.

The assembly is being run by a non-partisan nonprofit, and participants will be compensated $1350 plus childcare, plus accommodations for language and disability as needed.

This is an opportunity to make sure your voice is heard. So if you get an invitation, don’t throw it out! Use your personalized invite code and apply right away.

CCHS Tolerance Club & Reproductive Rights Club Drag Show fundraiser!

with drag queen Powder D’Vour at Robert Frost Auditorium

Condragulations to the fierce organizers and queens from last night’s fabulous CCHS Reproductive Rights Club + Tolerance Club Drag Show fundraiser!

Shout out to the queens who slayed their lip syncs, including CCHS senior Hawt Dawg who slayed the house down doing a pitch perfect Celine Dion. We opened our purses and all the coins raised benefited Planned Parenthood and the LA LGBT Center.

Shantay you all stay!

Sierra Club Trailblazers Ball

with fmr. Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells, Councilmember Yasmine Imani-McMorrin, Aaron, and a team of amazing environmental advocates at the Sierra Club Trailblazers Ball.

Thanks to Mayor Meghan Sahli for inviting me out to support the Sierra Club at their annual Trailblazers Ball. Congrats to honorees Dolores Huerta, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Dr. Lyla June Johnston, Our Children’s Trust, Sage Lenier, Ted Turner and Morgan Freeman!

Protecting our only home for future generations takes all of us.

Two seders!

with WeHo Councilmember Byers, Disa Lindgren, Melissa Minkin, Shifra Teitlebaum, and Jeanne Black at Jewish Partnership for LA’s Movement Seder at the Wende Museum.

with Mayor Puza, Rabbi Zach Shapiro, his daughter, and Aaron at Temple Akiba’s 2nd night seder.

I hope you had a lovely Passover. I was lucky enough to attend two meaningful sedars, one with Jewish Partnership for LA, a non-profit dedicated to promoting Jewish values across the region held their annual Movement Seder at the Wende Museum.

And I was also delighted to attend Culver City’s Temple Akiba hosted a beautiful Seder as well at their temple.

Passover reminds us to stand up to tyrants, to welcome the stranger, and that freedom is built together.

Bike Culver City’s ‘One Planet, Two Futures’ ride

with Bike Culver City organizer Chris Michel and Los Angeles CD11 candidate Faizah Malik outside City Hall before the ride.

Spent Saturday evening pedaling alongside @bikeculvercity for their “One Planet, Two Futures” ride from City Hall to Marina del Rey.

We checked out the infrastructure in both Culver City and LA and noted where crosswalks, bike lanes, slower speed limits, signage, and other safety investments were needed most.

Thanks @chris24michel for organizing and CD11 candidate @faizahforla for joining us!

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with me.

Hope to hear from you at tonight’s meeting!
