$$ Set Aside for New Budget Process!

Hey y’all,

I hope you had a refreshing holiday weekend.

I wanted to let you know that Culver City Council meets TONIGHT (yes, Tuesday due to yesterday being Memorial Day) at 7PM in Culver City Hall.

I sadly don’t have a video for you this week but I do have lots of juicy details from the last several meetings and a preview of tonight’s!

Progress Made Toward a Better Budget

Great news! A better budget process is one step closer.

Thank you to everyone who showed up last week to advocate for a community-driven budget process. Because of your efforts, we set aside $250K to improve our budget process to involve the community at every stage. The vote to include these funds was 3-2.

I’m also grateful for my colleague Culver City Councilwoman & Former Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin for her collaboration and Vice Mayor Puza for his support.

There’s no document more important to our city than its budget, and we all deserve a seat at the table.

Housing & Labor Wins from the Last Council Meeting

Here’s what went down at the last Culver City Council meeting!

Last Council Meeting

  • Approved $192K in Special Event Grants for Next Fiscal Year. I’m grateful that we were able to secure $12,000 for Culver City Pride during a time when support for LGBTQ+ programs is most at risk.

  • Resolution in support of peace and diplomacy in times of interantional conflict was sent back to Equity Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) for feedback.

  • TWO major milestones in our efforts to streamline housing production and address our ongoing housing affordability crisis passed.

    • Small lot subdivision ordinance passed, allowing residents to split their lot up to 10 times in accordance with state law.

    • Zoning code amendments adopted, reducing required community meetings for housing projects from 2 meetings to 1.

  • Passed a contractor transparnecy ordinance requiring contractors to disclose any labor disputes when applying for large construction projects with the city.

Meeting Tonight at 7PM!

Here’s what’s on the agenda TONIGHT at 7PM at City Hall (or Zoom)!

Council will discuss:

  • Whether to hire a contractor to manage the lifeguards at the Plunge.

  • Whether to ban the sale and use of glue traps citywide

  • Whether to endorse SB79 (Wiener) and AB609 (Wicks) to add housing and streamline production

  • Whether to appropriate funds toward the Ballona Creek Bike Path Extension Project (extending Ballona Creek Bike path Eastward from Syd Kronenthal Park) from the City’s Mobility Improvement Fund

As always, you can watch in person at Council Chambers (9770 Culver Blvd.) or remotely via Zoom.

You can request to speak here or send in your comment by emailing city.council@culvercity.org.

Hope to see (or hear) you there!

Around Town!

Miriam’s House

It was quite moving hearing the stories of addiction survivors at the Post Mothers Day Brunch event at Miriam’s House.

Miriam’s House is a sober living home for women and their children in Del Rey just blocks from Culver City that has housed over 400 families since it was founded in 2007.

The brunch celebrated their beautiful new renovations and raked in over $120K to keep Westside families together while on the road to recovery.

Special thanks to Board Member Marta Harmon who Aaron met while door knocking last year for inviting us!

Housing is a human right and we owe so much to organizations like Miriam’s House for making sure we are fulfilling that promise and taking care of one another.
